A card or payment surcharge is an extra charged for paying by a given method. Surcharging consumer debit and credit cards is restricted in the UK and EU, so where it survives it often reappears as a flat “booking” or “service” fee, or attaches to alternative payment methods. Elsewhere in the world card surcharges remain more common.

How to avoid or shrink it
- Check whether a fee is tied to one payment method and whether another method avoids it.
- Read the total on the final payment screen, where any surcharge appears.
- In regions where consumer-card surcharges are restricted, be alert to the same cost renamed as a booking fee.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
Rules differ sharply by country. A “no card fee” claim can be true locally yet a flat booking fee still applies — same cost, different label.
Count it in your true total
Run a specific booking through the calculator and this fee is counted — sourced, dated and confidence-graded alongside everything else the headline price leaves out.
