HIDDEN FEE

Early check-in / late check-out fee

Early arrival feeLate departure fee

Many hotels set a fixed check-in time in the afternoon and check-out in the morning; guaranteeing your room earlier or holding it later can carry a fee, sometimes priced as a fraction of a night or a whole extra night. It matters most when a flight lands early or leaves late and you would otherwise be without a room.

How to avoid or shrink it

  • Ask at booking — many hotels grant early check-in or late check-out free when occupancy allows.
  • Loyalty status often includes guaranteed late check-out at no charge.
  • For a very early arrival, storing bags for free and checking in at the normal time can beat paying for the extra hours.
THE HONEST CAVEAT

Free early/late is common when the hotel is not full — so the “fee” is really a charge for a guarantee. If your timing is flexible, you may never pay it.
