Shore excursions are the organised trips a cruise line sells at each port. They are convenient and carry a guarantee that the ship will not leave without you, but they are typically priced above equivalent tours booked independently ashore. They are not part of the cruise fare.

- Compare the ship’s excursion against a reputable independent operator at the port.
- Weigh the price premium against the ship’s “we’ll wait for you” guarantee, which independent tours lack.
- In many ports the highlights are walkable or reachable by cheap local transport with no tour at all.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
The premium buys a real guarantee — miss an independent tour’s return and the ship can sail without you. That protection has genuine value for tight port calls.
