HIDDEN FEE
Young driver surcharge
Under-25 feeYoung renter fee
Rental companies commonly add a per-day surcharge for drivers under an age threshold — frequently 25, sometimes 21 — reflecting higher assessed risk. Because it is charged per day, it can add up sharply on a longer hire and is often not in the headline rate.
Where it applies
How to avoid or shrink it
- Compare suppliers — the age threshold and surcharge differ, so one may charge you less than another.
- Where a policy allows it, having an older additional driver book the car may change the surcharge.
- Factor the per-day surcharge into the whole-hire total, not just the daily rate.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
This is priced on risk data, so it will not disappear — but suppliers set it differently, so it is worth comparing rather than assuming it is fixed.
